“Playing from memory, Mr. Lifschitz revealed how thoroughly he had internalized the notes, contours and character of each piece. In matters of tempo, balance, articulation and pedaling, every choice he made served the music. Yet so naturally poetic and expressive was his playing that he made it seem as if the entirety of the modern piano repertory lay nascent in these 48 pieces.”
